Abstract

This essay provides an evaluation of the trade policies applied in Mexico during the last quarter of the century and makes recommendations for the future. It follows the author’s advisory reports for the Government of Mexico, which proposed introducing an export subsidy scheme1 and reforming foreign trade and industrial policies2 as well as his appraisal of the policies of the 1973–8 period and recommendations for modifying these policies.3
