Abstract

In 1983/4 the estimated outturn of UK public expenditure on transport is £5,547 million or 4.6 per cent of total public expenditure (excluding adjustments for asset sales, contingency reserve and shortfall). As Table 12.1 shows, transport’s share of public spending has fallen over the last three years from the 5.1 per cent share it had in both 1979/80 and 1980/1. The White Paper on public expenditure shows plans for a further reduction in this share to around 4.3 per cent of total spending in the next three years.
