Abstract

In December 1975, Richard Stephenson, chairman of Stephenson, Turbridge and Bassett, Inc., was pondering the performance and future of his London office. Although ST&B, a Texas-based engineering consulting firm, had been represented overseas since 1967, Stephenson had never defined the London operation, the key to ST&B’s foreign activities, to his own satisfaction. Part of his problem was that his strong personal desire for an international presence resulted in his considering market position and presence one of the most important factors, if not the most important factor, in judging London office performance.
