Abstract

In our preface we made the point that putting the right people into the right jobs and encouraging the right development activity adds value. We have seen in earlier chapters that there are challenges in the implementation and that more effort and resource are needed in the area of understanding the key tasks of the organization, and the matching of the right people with the right skills to deliver them. In Chapter 4 we pursued the theme of developing people in the right way, recognizing that development is essential, is continuous, is value-adding, but in reality receives insufficient attention. We offered guidance on the implementation of appraisal systems and development centres. Throughout this chapter we will spend most of the time looking from the viewpoint of the organization at the challenge of optimizing the total people resource in the use of these processes.
