Abstract

Since 1990, the Brazilian automotive industry has been revitalised for a variety of reasons. Already established companies (Ford, GM, VM, Fiat, Scania, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz) and possible newcomers (Renault, Kia, Honda, Toyota, Mercedes-Benz car division) are planning investments in new plants or in brownfield modernisation owing to a growing demand in the country itself and in the Mercosul market as a whole (which joins Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina in a common market). The reduction of import tariffs has made international competition both a reality and a pressure for more competitive products and organisational processes, giving rise to a very different environment from that which has existed since the 1970s.
