Abstract

Before exploring the tools and practice of corporate environmental management, we will show with the aid of three examples how the way problems are considered from a business point of view can be usefully expanded to include environmental aspects. The following three strategic areas were selected: The use of microelectronics in conjunction with environmentally adapted technology; The automobile, in order to demonstrate the necessity of a shift of focus from product-related problems to whole systems of products, services and practices; The relationships of the corporation with both its suppliers and customers, which need to be modified if residues and wastes are to be re-used/recycled to the extent that a ‘closed-loop economy’ can be achieved.
