Stages of Evolution of Family Enterprises

Abstract

Part of the task of Chapter 1 was to grapple with the thorny issue of defining the subject of this book: the family enterprise. When reading the many definitions cited, one is struck by how many seem to convey a static, non-dynamic picture of the family firm. Yet both intuitively and experientially we know that all enterprises, whether or not they are family managed and/or owned, are anything but static. They change, transform, mutate and evolve over time. In other words they are dynamic. They share this vital characteristic with all organisms, plant or animal but most especially, in our context human.
