Abstract

In this chapter we analyse the characteristics of different types of employment contract and flexible work. We compare the flexible work categories with permanent full-time jobs. We examine men and women separately because the labour market is, to a large degree, segregated and segmented by gender. A range of characteristics are considered to see how far there are cross-sectional associations between certain characteristics and certain types of job. This part of our analysis uses mainly the Spring 1994 Labour Force Survey data. Industry, occupation, union membership, the durations of the jobs and their regions are all examined. Since these tables have all been published in an earlier publication, Dex and McCulloch (1995), we refer the reader to that source for the documentation of the statistics described here.
