Abstract

Programming and coding concepts, as well as tools and processes, connected to the use of computers have evolved quite significantly since the 1950s when computers were first marketed as commodities. They have also changed from notions prevailing in the early 1970s, when computers started being used in private branch exchanges (PBX) and in switching centres. Parallel-programming models have developed from procedures devised for specifying systems in which: There is a collection of runtime concurrent processing elements, and Different processes compete during operation for common resources and services.
