Abstract

Since the early 1980s changes have taken place in the German banking industry which are transforming its business environment. Market saturation in the segment of basic bank products and services, falling profitability in the lending business, increasing operating costs, changes in the saving and investment behaviour of the private clients and growing uncertainty on the corporate side of the business are indicators of the forces at work which have transformed the business parameters of the firms and are forcing the banks to revise their marketing strategies, rationalization concepts, and personnel policies.1
