Abstract

Some level of adversity exists in almost every foreign joint venture and business partnership in Korea, and occasionally it seems that common business objectives are all that remain to hold the relationship together. Conflict and potential communication breakdown due to cross-cultural differences lurk just skin-deep throughout corporate partnership-building, contract creation and every aspect of ongoing technology transfer, importation, production, advertising, financial control, administration and marketing. The list of flashpoints which can lead to traumatic problems is seemingly endless and experienced managers in Korea will probably feel that they have met them all! As a result, every working day in Korea can provide unique new experiences and troublesome adventures. These adventures can either raise blood pressure excessively or set adrenalin flowing with the excitement of challenge, largely dependent upon the foreign manager’s aptitude to cope with cultural partner conflict and willingness to gain a sound understanding of Korean business etiquette.
