Abstract

Korean business practice has evolved as another branch of the country’s cultural development, and that branch is very firmly part of the tree which has grown from traditional Confucian principles. Any relationship with a Korean business partner should be built using these principles and be seen by both sides as a long-term commitment. Although there are similarities between the social ethics of Japan and Korea, the traditional cultural background plays a greater part in Korean business etiquette than it does in Japan. It should be appreciated that Koreans do not like to be thought of as a latter-day Japan. Korean pride points out, sometimes quite forcefully, that much of Japan’s culture reached their islands by crossing the Eastern Sea from the Korean peninsula.
