Abstract

Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) generated an immense mass of material over a long life, during which he played star rôles on the political stage from 1773 to 1809, when he turned over the Presidency to his intimate friend, James Madison. And the life of the mind — let alone his Promethean mind — concerns Becoming, not Being. It is not easy to understand him: he will not sit still for his portrait. For that matter, he ceaselessly altered the of the Monticello mansion so long as his strength, and money, held out.
