Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to place foreign direct investment (FDI) in its UK context. The initial section of the chapter provides a definition of foreign direct investment. The second section shows the importance of flows of FDI to the UK economy, whilst the third section goes on to highlight the success of the UK in attracting new foreign manufacturing investment during the eighties. The final section considers why it is necessary to study the UK regional distribution of foreign inward investment, and outlines the content of the following chapters.
