The Banking System during Independence

Abstract

The development of the Cyprus banking system following independence has been greatly influenced by the rapid economic expansion of the island, the establishment of the Central Bank and the stiff competition which developed within the banking sector. We see a consolidation of the local banks, their resilience being especially demonstrated by their survival of the upheaval caused by the Turkish invasion.
