Robertson on Utility and Scope

In: Economic Science and Political Economy

  • Lionel Robbins

Abstract

Like each of its predecessors, the latest addition to Sir Dennis Robertson’s series of collected essays1 is full of good things. Some of the papers on policy are indeed among the most important that he has ever written. It is difficult, for instance, to conceive anything more elegant or more closely packed with wisdom than the Presidential Address for 1947 to Section F of the British Association on “The Economic Oudook,”* and this is only the leading example of a whole series of contributions whereby Sir Dennis has not only contributed to our knowledge of the theory of policy in general, but has also diffused sweetness and light amid the anxious and bewildering problems of our day.
