Abstract

The preceding chapters investigated how aspects of the Japanese manufacturing paradigm have been imitated in both large and small-batch jobbing engineering. The next case-study features the introduction of Japanese manufacturing principles in a firm characterized by small-batch production and a high union density. The research on this case took place during a period between February 1987 and May 1988. A comprehensive report outlining the firm’s deficiencies as perceived by eminent engineering consultants was made available, and is drawn upon in the study.1 The depth of the case-study data permits a close analysis of some aspects of the capitalist labour process in the mid-1980s, together with an evaluation of management labour strategies, patterns of labour utilization, and its regulation in the manufacturing sector.
