Abstract

The Republic of Philippines has a population of 57.3 million in an area of 300 000 square kilometers. It was a colony of Spain for over 300 years. In the wake of the Spanish-American war of 1898, it became a colony of the United States. US rule was reinstated after the 1941–5 Japanese occupation, followed by independence on July 4, 1946. The Philippines had free trade with the United States until independence. Under the 1946 agreement, duty-free status was maintained until 1955 and full duty status was reached in steps by 1974.
