Abstract

‘A hurricane from America has finally hit British shipping’, recorded The Economist in January, 1966.1 The hurricane was containerisation, a development destined to sweep aside Blue Funnel’s conventional liner services in a timespan shorter than anyone could have foreseen. It is to Ocean’s credit, recalling the pioneering traditions of the firm’s founders, that when the hurricane headed for Britain’s shores, Blue Funnel was well to the fore in Britain’s enterprising response.
