A Shift From Product to Process Innovation During the Postwar Upswing?

Abstract

The hypothesis of shifting from product to process innovations has often been linked to the lifecycle of new innovative growth industries. It is currently assumed that, in their initial phase, these industries have a large number of both product and process innovations and that, with the increasing maturity of the industry and the tendency to standardize products, it will become increasingly difficult to implement further radical product changes. Emphasis will shift from quality to price competition, and the latter will be an incentive for efforts towards process innovations. The tendency towards a process bias may be enhanced by labour shortages and wage rises as the long wave upswing proceeds.
