Testing the Soviet-Type Industrialisation Model in Socialist-Orientated Developing Countries

In: Economic Reforms in the Socialist World

Abstract

The so-called planned industrialisation model, one geared towards economic development based on state ownership and heavy industry, had spread to several Third World countries in the 1960s and 1970s. Its adoption was generally considered a symbol of political liberation and the best hope for economic self-sufficiency. Between 1960 and 1976, 1369 affiliates of transnational corporations were nationalised in the Third World, mainly in those countries which were implementing a socialist-orientated strategy of development.
