Abstract

It is tempting to see the decade 1976–86, spanning as it does the end of the conversion and the privatisation of British Gas, as something of a coda to earlier developments. The great themes of the past, Algerian natural gas, oil gasification, conversion, and the decline of manufacturing, had all come and gone. Now with the Staines headquarters, with tasks clarified and confined under the umbrella of British Gas, and with the Regions seemingly in the role of pawns to British Gas’s Chairman Rooke, the scope for individuality among Regions was obviously diminished.
