Abstract

The complexity of monetary phenomena and the contradictions between the various theories that attempt to explain them, and the frequency and the scale of changes in financial and banking practice, are all adequate reasons for proposing, right from the beginning of this book, a method of analysis which the reader may consider a sort of guiding principle. Rather than confine ourselves to generalities and mere theory, let us begin with an example which we all have before our eyes, and let us then go on from there to some concrete examples. In this way, the reader’s mind will have something solid to hold on to which will help it to perceive clearly one or two essential ideas from the beginning. The first example is the process of deregulation which has been taking place for some time in the United States in many different sectors, including the financial and banking sectors.
