Abstract

ASEAN or the Association of Southeast Asian Nations came into being in August 1967 when the Foreign Ministers from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand signed the Bangkok Declaration to express their desire for a good-neighbourly type of co-operation. In January 1984, the tiny oil-rich state, Brunei, just independent, joined the organisation as its sixth member.
