Abstract

There are two key objectives of this book. UK oil policy since the passage of the 1964 Continental Shelf Act is examined and a positive appraisal of policy is made. The UK government process is analysed, with respect to North Sea oil, by focusing on the behaviour of various groups and individuals involved in the policy process. The government is not viewed as a single entity with one set of objectives and priorities. Government is a dynamic process and policy influences and decisions are made in a constantly changing political and economic environment. An assessment of the government policy process is necessary in order to provide an understanding of the nature of the domestic oil industry and its relationship with the government.
