Leadership: The Chief Executive’s Role

Abstract

At the top of each excellent bank organisation is a chief executive whose role is the subject of this chapter. The understandable temptation to use the chief executive as a microscope to discover the secret of excellence is immediately thwarted by yet another rich profusion – this time of leadership styles. These range from the totally shared leadership role at Swiss Bank Corporation and Deutsche Bank to the charismatic, top-down leadership at Texas Commerce and UBS. What patterns of leadership are therefore found among the excellent banks? And are there any common themes or patterns which can help the outsider to relate leadership to excellence?
