Abstract

Authors in this volume have analysed management control from a variety of perspectives. It has been equated with control by a dominant managerial/capitalist class (Black and Neathey) and with holistic control of the organisation (Otley). In the first paper, control is seen as being exercised oppressively by one class over another. In the latter, control is conceptualised as a system of structures and processes which are ‘managed’ by both superiors and subordinates in order to ensure oraanisational viability and prosperity.
