Abstract

There are two rather different types of international comparison which should be made in a study of this type. First, the instability of the 1970s was not restricted to the British economy. In a number of countries a situation in some ways analogous to that in Britain developed. The first part of this chapter, therefore, briefly recounts some crises occurring in other countries. However, the more interesting comparison is made not with other countries, but with the experience of the world as a whole. The international debt crisis, which began in 1982, can be seen as a liquidity crisis on a world scale, although not one arising from the problems of any one bank; the second part therefore attempts to identify similarities between the development of international banking in the period leading up to the debt crisis, and the growth of the UK non-clearing banks before 1973.
