Demand for Tires for Passenger Cars and Commercial Vehicles

Abstract

In chapters 2, 3 and 4 projections were derived of the number of vehicles in use, new registrations and discards of vehicles both for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. This detailed analysis of the basic indicators of the size and the growth of the vehicle park was necessary in order to determine the demand for tires in the country where the tires are used as was already indicated in chapter 1, section 1.2. It has also been pointed out previously, that new registrations of vehicles can be used as the variable determining the demand for tires for original equipment. The demand for tires for tire replacement purposes, however, is determined by vehicles in use minus that year’s discards, since it is assumed that tire replacement will not take place just prior before discarding of the vehicle. After some background information about properties of and types of tires (sections 5.2), the method of deriving demand for tires will be presented: original equipment (OE) tires in section 5.3 and replacement (RP) tires in section 5.4. The relationships referred to in this chapter are illustrated in figure 5.1.
