Industry Structure Analysis and Public Policy

Abstract

The structure of industry has long been a concern of public policy, particularly in the arenas of anti-trust and regulation of public utilities. Recently, moves towards deregulation have renewed general concern with the issue, happily just at the moment when economic analysis was producing some major new insights on the subject. This chapter reviews and summarizes some of the new analysis and examines some of its implications for public policy.
