The Impact of the Trade with the Soviet Union on Finnish Economy

In: Finnish-Soviet Economic Relations

Abstract

The economic relations between Finland and the Soviet Union are based on an agreement on payments and the exchange of goods dating from 1946 and on a trade treaty signed in 1947. The former calls for the use of bilateral clearing arrangements and the latter accords each party most favoured nation status in matters relating to tariffs and barriers to trade. The fact that trade has been based on bilateral clearing arrangements has been of significance for Finnish economy and will be discussed below. As a result of its most favoured nation status, the Soviet Union has received the same tariff reductions as the EFTA and EC countries.
