On the Theory of East-West Economic Relations

Abstract

We live in a world divided into the socialist countries of the ‘East’ and the capitalist countries of the ‘West’. The countries of the ‘East’ are here taken to be primarily the socialist countries of Europe while the ‘West’ comprises mainly the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) countries. For many other countries the East-West dichotomy is more problematic. Moreover, North-South problems will not be considered in this study. The trade relations that are examined are indicated in Figure 1.1.
