Abstract

Analysis of the construction industry involves its dissection to understand the nature and functioning of each separate part. An understanding of each part separately is however insufficient for the understanding of the industry. The interrelationship of the parts must also be studied. Some of these relationships have been described in Chapter 3. This chapter concentrates on those between resource inputs and output on the one hand and between demand and output on the other. There are several ways in which these relationships can be viewed of which the main ones covered here are: (a) the resource inputs required to produce a given level and mix of output (b) the capacity of the industry to produce outputs of various types (c) the effects of demand exceeding capacity, of capacity exceeding demand and of fluctuations.
