Abstract

Savings bank deposits in the Soviet Union have risen from 1.853 bn roubles in 1950 to 156.514 bn in 1980 — an astonishing increase of more than 80-fold (see Table 11.1 and, as regards annual increments, Figure 11.1). The rate of growth has been declining, but rather slowly. From 1950 to 1960 the increase was 5.9 times; from 1960 to 1970, 4.3 times; from 1970 to 1980, 3.4 times. While the trend hardly permits reliable extrapolation, a further decline in the rate of growth, combined with further increases in absolute terms, seems probable.
