Abstract

During the past few years, manufacturing companies have been operating in a more rapidly changing supply environment, as well as a highly competitive market environment. This has been characterised by material shortages, high inflation rates, a lack of economic growth and unstable exchange rates. Such factors also affect supply markets and have a dramatic impact upon the ability of companies to achieve their corporate plans and profit targets. In spite of this, the contribution which an effective purchasing function can make to a business is often greatly underestimated. A clear need exists for purchasing strategies to be more fully integrated into corporate plans. By doing so, a company can derive the maximum cost benefits from its purchasing decisions and can also achieve greater security of supplies.
