Abstract

It was a great relief to hear that the Planning Committee for this symposium wanted to move communication studies away from communications specialists. That made me feel more relaxed, though, mind you, last week I realised I was better informed than some of my countrymen. I saw from a bus the Welsh Nationalist slogans painted on the base of Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. The first line read: ‘Fourth Channel for Wales’. The second line was in Welsh and the third line read: ‘Tories Betray …’ and then petered out. An articulate middle-aged lady sitting behind me looked at her articulate middle-aged neighbour and said, ‘Fourth channel for Wales. What do they want a fourth channel for? They haven’t even got one yet’.
