Abstract

Irrespective of the type of research to be undertaken its success will depend more than anything on the quality of the scientific staff. Not all scientists and engineers, even though well qualified, are suitable for research and development efforts. People have to be selected who offer the highest probability of creating new ideas and who at the same time are capable of working without close supervision in fields where few facts are available. Probably the vital ingredients for success in a scientist are curiosity and initiative and an urge to improve everything he comes into contact with. He is likely to have a good education and must have-above average intelligence. He must know his subject in a professional manner and be able to apply his talents to it and he must have an urge to accomplish something. Enthusiasm is a great asset, though many researchers achieve results with an attitude that appears to fall short of enthusiasm.
