Abstract

The psychological structure of pay attitudes may be derived from the theory of the employment attitude system. It has five main features: (i) Pay attitudes do not comprise a unitary structure but a multistructure; there is no single criterion which integrates all aspects of pay attitudes. (ii) Pay attitudes are hierarchically structured. (iii) The explanation of a given pay attitude generally involves many other pay attitudes; pay attitude systems are multivariable. (iv) Pay satisfaction is equivalent to a general evaluation of pay. (v) Pay attitudes are in general unconnected with intentions, preferences and choices, but in specific cases links may arise, through features of the situation.
