Abstract

A modern economic history that would summarise and evaluate a given period — in this case, the years when capitalism was taking shape — of a country’s economic development must necessarily address itself to three main issues. (1) It needs to ascertain the particular country’s role in the world economy at the beginning and at the end of the period; (2) it needs to give an idea of the nature and pace of the economic development that took place — to show the extent of the economic growth and of the structural changes that transpired; and (3) it needs to analyse the socio-political context that determined the direction and rate of this economic growth.
