Abstract

Throughout scientific history, nationalism has served as a major incentive for the development of technology. In Japan, for example, satellites are being launched by a group at the University of Tokyo for apparently scientific reasons, but, perhaps, if one were to look more closely, the real motivation behind this project would turn out to be the nationalism of the researchers. Of course, when the researchers submitted their request for a budget, the objective of the project was expressed in scientific terms, such as studying the upper layer of the atmosphere. In reality, however, engineers engaged in the project are more interested in launching a satellite through indigenous technology than in studying anything in the upper atmosphere. When people talk about technological development, they usually proffer some objective, but in many cases the researchers involved in the development are primarily motivated by nationalistic feelings.
