Abstract

There are two main regions in Malaysia, peninsular Malaysia (West Malaysia), located south of Thailand; and Sabah and Sarawak (East Malaysia), located across the South China Sea in the northern part of the island of Borneo. Its total land area is approximately 331000 square kilometres. The population of Malaysia (based on 1980 estimates) is 14261200, with the major part (some 11849000) living in West Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak’s populations are respectively 1097800 and 1314400. Of the people in peninsular Malaysia, 53.9 per cent are Malay, 34.9 per cent Chinese and 10.5 per cent Indian. Another important feature of the population structure is that a high proportion are young. In 1980, for example, 71.8 per cent of the labour force fell within the age group 15–39 years. While a greater proportion has become urbanised, 65 per cent in 1980 still lived in rural areas.
