Improving the Breed

Abstract

Between 1928 and 1932, Royce devoted most of his attention to the Schneider Trophy engines and to the ‘F’ or Kestrel engine for the R.A.F. He was also toying with the idea of producing a small radial engine suitable for small private aircraft.2 It is not surprising that he should have come to the conclusion that the basic V-12 type of liquid-cooled engine, on which he had worked for some fifteen years, had been fairly fully exploited from the design point of view, if not from that of development, and since very considerable progress in radial engines was being made by Bristols and Armstrong-Siddeley in England, and more especially by Wright and Pratt & Whitney in the United States, the temptation to shift his attention to this type of engine is understandable.
