Abstract

The final occupation of Bohemia and the total subjugation of Czechoslovakia began on 14 March and in his Birmingham speech a few days later Mr Chamberlain made it clear that the years of illusion were over. But the lingering hopes for peace still prevented full-scale industrial mobilisation, and this is clearly reflected in the figures of engine production for the first few months of 1939. The December 1938 total was not again exceeded until the following October, and in April production fell as low as 145. This reflects to some extent the limited capacity of Derby as a production factory, particularly when still encumbered with chassis production. It does not take into account the very great efforts which were being made at Crewe, and which were subsequently to be made at Glasgow, to expand the potential of the group. Sub-contract work also increased steadily in volume.
