Abstract

France has had a unique position in the international economic order and to a lesser extent in international financial markets in the post-war period. She has been the strongest opponent of American or Anglo-Saxon views upon economic and financial matters, standing up for the rights of Europe against the US. In this era the French have consistently opposed what they regarded as the abuse of the international monetary system by the Americans, such as the way in which they bought European assets with money borrowed in the eurodollar market. The French opposed the creation of SDRs in the late 1960s. They have been strong advocates of a return to gold, or at least giving gold its due prominence in the system.
