Abstract

During the summer of 1940 Britain stood alone, facing an implacable enemy with the most formidable army and the strongest air force in the world. German soldiers guarded the Atlantic coast, braced for the invasion of the British Isles, while German submarines roved the seas in search of British ships. Bomber squadrons subjected London and other cities to destructive air raids, in an effort to bomb the population into submission, or at least, negotiation. The future of Britain as a sovereign nation hung in the balance.
