Abstract

One lesson to be learned from the case studies presented in the previous chapter, especially the discussion on the steel industry, is that a demand for nationalisation by itself cannot constitute a complete industrial policy. However strong the case for public ownership, practical problems remain to be solved once an industry is nationalised. If these problems are not recognised and a transfer in ownership is seen as the complete answer, disillusionment with the performance of public ownership will inevitably result.
