Abstract

The expansion of Sudanese agricultural production has historically been based on a strategy that placed major emphasis on expanding the area under cultivation in both irrigated and rain-fed areas. During the 1960s the area under cultivation increased by an average of 3.7 per cent per year and agricultural output increased by only 4.3 per cent per year (between 1960–4 and 1965–9 at constant 1969 prices), with crops increasing at a slightly higher rate than livestock. The index of agricultural production, on a per caput basis, varied between 122 in 1971, 110 in 1973 and 120 in 1974 (1961−5 = l00).
