Abstract

Professor Dunning of Reading University opened the conference with a paper on the various ways a government might act to control foreign direct investment. He emphasised the need to broaden the analysis beyond mere economic cost and benefit, to include also social, cultural and political aspirations. Thus, foreign investment might be economically viable but socially or politically unacceptable. These broader considerations had to be taken into account.
