Abstract

By 1970, 22 out of 79 companies in our French sample had a single business accounting for between 95 and 70 per cent of sales, and were therefore classified in the dominant business category. The figures probably under- rather than overestimate the importance of these companies within the French environment since the average size of dominant companies was larger than that of the others in the sample.’ Such companies employed a large percentage of French executives and were responsible for managing a significant portion of the nation’s resources. Strategic and structural problems of these companies were thus important within the context of the French industrial environment.
