Abstract

Some quantitative comparisons of West Germany with the United Kingdom may help to put the subsequent discussion of the West German economy into perspective. West Germany and the United Kingdom are very similar in land area and population (table 1), and their overall population densities of over 200 persons per square kilometre are among the highest in the world. However the geographical distribution of the population differs considerably. In the United Kingdom there is a strong concentration of population in the capital, with no other urban centre of comparable standing. West Germany on the other hand has some six conurbations, all of comparable size, as well as a larger proportion of its population in medium-sized towns of under 500,000.1
